My cell phone buzzed while I was driving home. I didn’t look at it until after I parked.

Charming? Angela had texted.

RONALD, I texted back in caps.

EIGHT

That night after Ryan had gone to bed, I pulled out an old photo album. One from before Ryan was born.

Greg and I got married six months after we met. Far too soon, I would tell anyone now. But it had worked out for us. We had been happy for many years and content for several more.

Okay, maybe that was a slight exaggeration. It wasn’t a storybook marriage. Greg hadn’t been much of a listener. A lot of men aren’t, I know. He watched a lot of football and hockey on television, whereas I like to read books. He wasn’t much interested in discussing anything I read.

On the other hand, I’m pretty sure he had wished I was the sort of gal who was interested in sports.

In the beginning Greg wasn’t sure he wanted kids. He certainly didn’t want more than one. But when he saw Ryan for the first time, he fell in love. Greg had been a faithful husband and a good dad. Not exactly helpful with diapers, perhaps. That fell to me. But he had provided for his family and never complained about having to do so.

He was a good guy. Not a Disney prince. Certainly not Prince Charming. But I had loved him.

I flipped open the cover of the album. This is bad, I told myself. Don’t go there.

Like some message from heaven, the phone rang. I picked it up.

“How are you, darling? I was thinking of you just now and had an overwhelming urge to call.” It was Mom, of course.

I smiled. Are all mothers clairvoyant? “All fine here,” I said. “When are you coming home?” Oh dear. Was that too obvious? Would she immediately conclude that I was feeling lonely and sad tonight?

“A little earlier than intended. I’m tired of Florida, to be frank. Miss you guys too much. We’re packing up now. Dad plans to be on the road by Sunday. We’ll have a leisurely trip back. He’s planned three overnight stops to break up the driving. So we should be home by Wednesday.”

Wednesday? That meant I had only another five days to meet Prince Charming!

“Wonderful!” I said, not entirely sure if it was or not. Well, it was in one way. I missed them. But this E-Galaxy experiment was going to be impossible to conduct with my parents looking over my shoulder.

“We’ll be arriving late, I expect,” said Mom. “Your dad will be very tired.”

“I’ll get in basic supplies for you,” I said. “Bread, butter, milk, cream for coffee. That sort of thing.”

“Thanks, dear. Love to Ryan. See you soon!”

I clicked off, feeling happy. How strange. Was it normal for a person to go from sad to happy with just one phone call?

I put the photo album away and went to bed.
